Accra Polytechnic, the Premier Polytechnic in Ghana was established in 1949. It was firstly known as Accra Technical School. Later became known as Accra Technical Institute in 1957. In 1963, the institute was named Accra Polytechnic by the orders of Ghana’s First President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Accra Polytechnic by the mandate of the Polytechnic Law of 1992 (PNDCL.321), was elevated to a tertiary status in 1993 to offer Higher National Diploma (HND) certificate programmes.

Its elevation was aimed at enhancing tertiary institution through excellence, professionalism and diversity in its programmes. The institution produces all-round, innovative, and disciplined graduates who continually contribute immensely towards the manpower needed in Ghana’s industries.

Notwithstanding some teething problems, Accra Polytechnic has made tremendous progress through the review and expansion of curricula to suit contemporary needs. Courses offered are: Interior Architecture & Furnishing, Secretaryship and Management Studies, Bilingual Secretaryship and Management Studies, Accountancy, Marketing, Purchasing and Supply, Hotel Catering and Institutional Management, Fashion Design and Textiles, Mathematics and Statistics, and Science Laboratory Technology. The technology courses offered by the Polytechnic were maintained.

Job Description

Job Title: Director of Works and Physical Development

  • Responsibilities: The Director of Works and Physical Development main job schedule is the strategic planning, development, alteration and operation of the Physical Estate and Buildings and their services to support the academic activities of the University and may undertake such service as the case may be for the University community within the standards, guidelines and the’ interest of the University upon approval.

    •   The Director of Works and Physical Development is responsible for the activities of the following divisions under the Directorate

  • The Physical Development Works and Housing
  • Architectural and Engineering
  • Quantity Surveying
  • Grounds and Environmental Health
  • Services and Operations
  • Estate organization•   Planning, designing and development of the University infrastructural facilities and services;
    •   Supervises all works and contracts to ensure that construction and renovations are in consonance with prevailing industry standards and specifications;
    •   Provides technical specification for the procurement of consultancy services relating to the provision of technical advice on construction in compliance with national laws and regulations;     .
    •   Analyzing and certifying work valuation prepared by consultants for payment;
    •   Maintaining facilities and services for effective and efficient operations of the University;
    •   Developing and updating of the University Physical Master Plan;
    •   Prepares and presents budget for the Physical Development Directorate, etc.

    Qualification Required & Experience

    •   A minimum of a Masters Degree in the Built Environment PLUS relevant Professional Qualification.
    •   Must have at least twelve (12) years post-qualification experience in senior management position in infrastructural project management activities in tertiary institution, industry or any relevant public service organization.
    •   Candidates must show dear evidence of ability to hold schedule( s) without supervision.
    •   Must be computer literate
