Aspire Food Group is a social enterprise dedicated to the sustainable practice of farming edible insects. In Ghana, Aspire seeks to farm locally desired insects as a way to address food insecurity. Aspire farms the palm weevil larvae, a local delicacy that has been traditionally harvested. In addition, Aspire Ghana has also taught several hundred farmers in Southern and Central Ghana to be able to farm their own larva as a source of household animal protein and as an opportunity for increased income. Aspire Ghana seeks to rapidly scale its production, co-develop packaged products, take advantage of export opportunities to other West African countries, support its network of farmers to scale their production and to advance research on the palm weevil larvae.

Job Description

Job Title: Field Supervisor

Role description:

Aspire Food Group Ghana is looking for a driven, innovative, adaptable individual to drive growth of our palm weevil larvae rearing community empowerment program in Bekwai, Ashanti Region, Ghana. The field supervisor’s role is to iterate and innovate on the current program to better the livelihoods of farmers through increases in income and access to animal protein. The field supervisor must monitor and evaluate the program to ensure progress is being made as well as co-ordinate logistics. The field supervisor will also be tasked with the supervision of field assistants. The field supervisor must be comfortable working in farm-like conditions. The supervisor would ideally live in the community (Bekwai) or within a short distance and be in the community 70-80% of the time. The remaining 20-30% of the time would be spent at Aspire headquarters on KNUST Campus in Kumasi or working on other initiatives as requested. We are looking to fill this position ASAP. Please note that no financial support will be provided for lodging or moving.

  • Organize and execute training to participants (marketing trainings, small business trainings, entomological trainings, farming trainings)
  • Iterate and innovate novel training and testing techniques
  • Create and update training materials (training of participants and training of trainers)
  • Adapt best practices of palm weevil larvae farming to the conditions of the field
  • Analyze and make comparisons of novel farming techniques and training techniques
  • Recruit participants
  • Monitor data collection of field activities and participant activity
  • Co-ordinate logistics
  • Compute key performance indicators
  • Researching and applying for grant opportunities

Requisite Skills:

  • Minimum two years of relevant, professional work experience.
  • Working proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Fluent in spoken Twi
  • Bachelor’s level degree in Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, Sustainable Development, Economics, Biology or related field.
  • Proficient in Word, Excel and Powerpoint in particular, experienced with conducting statistical analyses on Excel
  • Passion for social enterprise
  • Highly adaptable and flexible; understands the evolution of a growing and dynamic organization
  • Diligent, punctual, hardworking and very honest
  • Excellent communication skills; familiar with quick & responsive email communication
  • Comfortable working under little supervision yet with rigorous reporting mechanisms
  • Excellent record keeping and documentation skills
  • Must be able to trouble-shoot & get creative to achieve organizational goals
  • Must be comfortable working under pressure in a growth-driven organization
  • Must be comfortable with performance being measured
  • Must be comfortable working in a start-up environment that is dynamic
  • Agricultural extension experience is an asset
  • Adult education experience is an asset
  • Grant writing experience is an asset

Reports to: Director of Social Impact & Operations

Length of Contract: 1 year, with a three month probation period.
