Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), discovers and promotes effective solutions to global poverty problems. IPA works with development partners and academic researchers to design and rigorously evaluate, sometimes implement approaches to solving development problems, and to refine these solutions and their applications together with decision-makers to ensure that the evidence created is used to improve opportunities for the world’s poor. IPA works in a variety of fields, including education, agriculture, microfinance, and health.

Since our founding in 2002, IPA has conducted over 450 evaluations in 51 countries. This research has informed hundreds of successful programs that now impact millions of individuals worldwide. IPA has been formally established in Ghana since 2009 and has experienced a fast growth since then. It has a young and dynamic team overseeing 19 ongoing projects, and composed of 84 permanent staff.

Job Description

The IPA Ghana office seeks an enthusiastic, motivated and talented person, who is passionate about working with data and committed to solving poverty problems. If you have very strong quantitative data management skills, are interested in working in various sectors, including agriculture and public health, and would like to work in a dynamic, multi-cultural and high performing team, then you may be the Research and Data Coordinator that we are looking for.

Responsibilities
The Research and Data Coordinator will work in close collaboration with the Survey Coordinators and Data Managers to support data management activities and ensure that all projects collect high quality data. The Research and Data Coordinator will train staff in research and data management skills, collect best practices from IPA offices worldwide, assist projects develop data flow systems incorporating data safety protocols, and help projects with data cleaning and encryptions. A key component of the role involves building the capacity of the Data Managers and Research Associates to manage data at all levels and use Stata. Furthermore, the Research and Data Coordinator will analyze data and prepare reports targeting different stakeholder groups.

Data-related support:

  • Work together with the Principal Investigators on demand to clean and analyze data and produce policy briefs, reports and other communication tools targeting various stakeholder groups. In particular, play a lead role in managing, cleaning and analyzing data being collected on the DIRTS project.

Manage the team of IPA Ghana Data Managers, comprised of one data manager in Tamale and one data manager in Accra, to enhance the support that they provide to project teams, specifically:

  • Help project teams clean data and prepare it for analysis.
  • Help project teams develop systems for monitoring data collection and establishing appropriate back checking, editing and tracking systems.
  • Coordinate and support the implementation of surveys into Computer Assisted Interviewing (CAI) software and co-lead staff trainings in CAI.

Lead the quest to improve IPA Ghana data management systems

  • Provide regular trainings to staff to enhance their data management, Stata, data analysis and other technical skills.
  • Collect best practices from IPA offices worldwide and help implement them in IPA Ghana.
  • Monitor and evaluate IPA Ghana projects making sure projects know and follow IPA data management protocols.
  • Send out quarterly newsletters on major research topics to all IPA Ghana research staff.

We are looking for a commitment period of one year for this position, which may be extended based on the availability of funds.

Required Skills or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree economics, statistics, mathematics, social sciences, public policy, or related fields; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Flexible, self-motivating, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently, and team player.
  • Strong quantitative skills and at least 2 years of quantitative data management experience.
  • Excellent Stata software skills and experience managing survey data using Stata
  • Experience with SurveyCTO is a strong plus.
  • Excellent management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.
  • Teaching experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with randomized controlled trials preferred.
  • Experience living in a developing country is a strong plus.
