Job Description

Reporting to: Managing Director, Keegan Ghana Resources Ltd. (KRGL)
Project: Esaase Gold Project
Location: Ghana, West Africa

The Operations Manager will work as part of a multi-disciplined team, taking the lead role in overseeing all aspects of an open pit mine development and operation for the Esaase Gold Project. The project is currently in the initial stage of a Feasibility Study. The Operations Manager will oversee and lead the development and execution of strategies to enhance operations practices and performance required for open pit mine production and will lead and oversee all ongoing site based activities. This role will suit an experienced mining engineer with technical, analytical and management skills, strong interpersonal skills and proven international experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure safe operating procedures are in place and followed; promote compliance with health, safety and environmental measures at all times
  • Manage the human, technical and operational resources of the mine operations including mining, processing, maintenance projects, safety, environment, security, and site services
  • Analyze production data and reports, investigate variances and implement action plans to optimize process performance
  • Coordinate the preparation and submission of work budgets, monitor monthly costs and set operational plans to achieve targets
  • Assist in developing annual operating and capital budgets for the mine consistent with the company’s financial guidelines and business planning processes
  • Short and long term planning, engineering and cost studies for possible mine expansion
  • Provide operations reporting on an ongoing basis
  • Participate with other senior management to set production goals
  • Set priorities and allocate resources
  • Identify strategies and key performance goals
  • Provide salary recommendations and Carry out performance evaluations
  • Ensure appropriate project close-out and lessons learned reports are generated and distributed at the conclusion of the project
  • Maintain effective verbal and written communications with superiors, subordinates and colleagues, internally and externally, including stakeholders and associated government agencies
  • Serve as an advisor to direct reports and develop through continuous learning, experience opportunities, mentoring and coaching
  • Manage regulatory and local community affairs as they relate to the site operations
  • Ensure smooth follow of information and documentation between the Mine’s operational department and KRGL’s administrative and financial departments while meeting regulatory, policy and procedural requirements

Required Skills or Experience

  • More than 15 years of mine production management related experience
  • Possession of a Mine Superintendent or Mine Manager’s certificate awarded by the Inspectorate Division of the Ghana Minerals Commission
  • Previous leadership experience with a proven history of managing open-pit mining operations
  • Strong aptitude for process improvement particularly for planning, scheduling and feed improvement
  • Detailed knowledge of all phases of mining, and the integration of the community relations, human resources, mining, milling, technical services and maintenance functions
  • Ability to develop operating plans, budgets and cost estimates
  • Computer literacy with the ability to use MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and Internet proficiently
  • Conversant with any of the following Survey softwares: Surpac, Whittle, Mining Softwares; Xera, Talpac, Xpac will be an advantage
  • Ability to read, analyze and evaluate written materials and statistical data including reports, financial reports and budgets
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to demonstrating and promoting continuous improvement, team work, professionalism and a capacity to deliver results should be evident
  • Knowledge of OHS Act and Mine Health & Safety Act
  • Sound knowledge of regulatory standards and design criteria
  • Corporate membership of the Ghana Institution of Engineers will be an advantage

Education:

  • University degree in mining or mineral engineering or related field; post-graduate degree in either mining/mineral engineering, production management or MBA  is preferable
