Abosso Gold Fields Limited – Damang Gold Mine, a subsidiary of Gold Fields International is a world-class operation, consisting of 25 Mtpa open pit-mining operations and a 5.2 Mtpa CIL Metallurgical Plant. The mine is located in a tropical climate in the Western Region of Ghana

 

1. Project Manager (EL) – Gold Fields West African Region

Description

Purpose of the position:

  • The Projects Manager will report to the Head of Projects – West Africa with primary focus being placed on:
  • The management and execution of all Gold Fields Ghana Sustainable Capital ‘Brownfield’ Projects as approved by the Regional Executive Committee (REXCO)
  • Ensuring effective engineering design for the region, coupled to stringent engineering research, development and risk assessments, meet all conditions prevalent to the Gold Fields Capital Investment framework
  • Place key focus on safety and risk management
  • Ensuring all project design and construction is effectively managed within the framework of the appropriate Government agencies such as the Ghana Mines Inspectorate, National Environmental Protection Authority, National Energy suppliers (VRA, GRIDCO, ECG)
  • The development, mentoring and coaching of human resources within the department

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide key technical management input into all Sustainable Capital Expense ‘Brownfields’ projects/plant enhancements to ensure full compliance with Gold Fields Mining Capital Improvement Framework
  • Provide the key project management link required between the regional operations, regional technical department and third party design consultants for all ‘Brownfields’ projects for in-house plant enhancements
  • Provide key guidance for all design reviews plus drawings and document checks
  • Actively participate in the selection of approved vendors and contractors
  • Provide technical input and guidance to address problem solving during project construction and commissioning
  • In support of all projects, provide diligent progress reporting, analysis, and recommendations, comprehensive data capture, all within the Gold Fields CIF
  • Ensure operational cost control and risk mitigating initiatives are managed within approved and set targets
  • Support the implementation of proactive maintenance strategies and programmes, post project commissioning
  • Ensure that various engineering disciplines provided by contractors interact seamlessly and safely
  • Maintain high focus on employee development, succession planning and mentoring of engineering staff
  • Maintain a safe and friendly environment in ensuring that developed and implemented in compliance with ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 requirements

 

Required Skills or Experience

  • BSc degree or appropriate tertiary qualification in the field of Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution
  • 10-15 years of work experience as Senior Manager/Engineering Manager/Projects Manager Minimum of 10 years international project and contract management experience associated with medium/large Mine projects covering all aspects of engineering design, R&D, procurement, contracts management, fabrication and construction management
  • Comprehensive knowledge, coupled with minimum of 10 years practical experience in the management of the engineering functions in the mining industry related to Gold Processing CIL and Heap Leach Plant plus large scale Surface Mining Plant and Equipment
  • Demonstrable understanding of good engineering practices and the implementation of proactive maintenance strategies
  • Possess working knowledge of Auto CAD, Microsoft Word, Excel, Power point and MS Project Scheduler, SAP Planned Maintenance
  • The ability to meet diverse engineering challenges within the broad scope of the engineering field pertaining to production orientated activities and project management
  • Have tenacity and unquestionable integrity
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills
  • A hands-on approach and be willing to work long hours to obtain the required results
  • Meet GFG medical fitness for the position and environment

It would be advantageous if applicants have:

  • Work experience within the mining industry in developing countries
  • Work experience in a remote locations and having resided in a camp environment
  • Training and development of personnel through sound principles of apprenticeship and junior engineering training programs
2. Unit Manager – HME (DU)

Purpose of the position:
The HME Department of Tarkwa Gold Mine is seeking to engage the services of an experienced person to fill the above position. Reporting to the Manager – HME, the incumbent will be responsible for operational cost control, equipment availability and performance, risk mitigating initiatives and contract management. The Unit Manager – HME will be responsible for developing and maintaining operating systems, processes, policies, standard and legal equipments for the efficient and effective achievements of the objectives of the business unit.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring equipment availability and performance, risk mitigating initiatives and managing contracts
  • Interacting with operational personnel to optimize equipment performance
  • Day-to-day management of the Mine Maintenance section
  • Improved utilization of inspection period through better focus and resources
  • Implementation of minor repair execution and better quantification of required back log repairs
  • Ensuring improved equipment inspection process and problem identification
  • Effective planning of HME consignment stock and parts/material requirement
  • Planning, optimisation and auditing HME maintenance system
  • Assist to develop departmental budgets aligned with the company’s operational and cost requirements
  • Liaising with Government agencies such as the Inspector of Machinery to ensure that engineering services are delivered according to standards
  • Developing and implementing cost saving initiatives
  • Ensuring effective development of departmental staff in preparation for more senior positions
  • Ensuring that effective engineering standards and procedures are developed and implemented in compliance with ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 requirements

 

Required Skills or Experience

Advertisement
  • A tertiary qualification in the field of Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Eight years management experience in a maintenance function on mobile mining equipment
  • Hands-on experience on mobile mining equipment such as Caterpillar, Liebherr and Sandvik
  • Sound business acumen and the ability to influence the main cost drivers in this environment
  • Advanced level of technical communications, personal interaction and presentation skills
  • Results-oriented to achieve production targets whilst ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations of standards
  • Strong organisational skills to manage all mine maintenance and project work
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken, as well as the ability to interact with people of diverse cultures
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office and a working knowledge of planned maintenance software packages
  • Exposure to environmental awareness programs
  • Medical fitness for the position and environment
  • Technical problem solving and failure analysis skills

It would be advantageous if applicants have:

  • Experience in management of Maintenance and Repair Contracts
  • Project planning and management experience
  • 6 Sigma experience/training
3. Contracts Manager (D-Upper)

Purpose of the Job:
Gold Fields Ghana is seeking to employ an experienced and self motivated person to fill the position, based at the Shared Services Centre at Tarkwa. Reporting ultimately to the Regional Supply Chain Manager, the successful applicant will apply acquired knowledge and experience in the mining industry to manage and ensure the implementation of a highly effective Supply Chain and Contract Management systems in line with global best practices, principles and systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contract Administration, including contract enquiry preparation and issuing enquiry documents, enquiry evaluations, recommendations to client and contract award, managing of the contract amendments, termination and close out
  • Evaluating, measuring and certifying of Contractors Progress Applications and claims on a monthly and fortnightly basis
  • Management reporting on contract procurement process and strategies
  • Minimising cost expenditure in-line with best practices
  • Contracting activities at operational and regional level
  • Business analysis on: Markets, Spending, Consumption and others, as required
  • Implementation and ensuring compliance of Contracting Policies and Procedures
  • Provide minimum standards for the procurement of Capital materials to satisfy customer and commercial requirements in alignment with market conditions

 

Required Skills or Experience

  • Must possess a degree/diploma relevant to mining industry
  • Possess a Commercial or Technical Qualification in relevant business discipline
  • Demonstrate good understanding of Supply Chain Operations, Contract Management, Sourcing for Capital Services, and Direct
  • Purchasing and Stock management within the supply/utility operations of large resource
  • Must be willing to travel for extended periods at a time
  • Around 3-5 years Management experience/exposure
  • Sound understanding of project methodologies and experience in project management
  • Experience in Procurement and Contracts Management
  • Demonstrated Supervision and Leadership skills or aptitude
  • Excellent mathematical and evaluation skills
  • Well developed oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience in SAP Business processes
  • Medical fitness for the position and environment
  • A valid driver’s license
