The MRC Unit, The Gambia is the Council’s largest establishment conducting medical research in a developing country. The Unit aims to improve the health of people in low-income countries by excellence in a multi-disciplinary research programmes. We have developed an exciting research agenda to reflect changes in national and global health priorities. Our new science portfolio is organized around three themes: Child Survival, Disease Control & Elimination and Vaccination.

 

Job Description

The Unit wishes to recruit an Operations Manager for its Baase Field Station, which is the largest MRC Field Station in The Gambia in terms of the number of staff and project based there. It formally opened in 1982, and has been the base for a number of large, successful, internationally significant clinical research trials since then, as well as numerous smaller trials and projects.

  • It is looking for someone that has significant presence, determination and influence to be responsible for managing the operations of the Basse Field Station as a successful platform for the scientific projects operating there and for managing the Field Station’s resources efficiently and effectively.

The appointment will be for 3 years and is subject to a probationary period of 6 months.

The Salary will be in Occupational Group E1/E2 dependent on qualifications and experience. For displaced staff the package will include rent-free furnished and accommodation, flights, contribution to school fees and shipment of personal effects

Required Skills or Experience

 

  • Educated to degree level or considerable relevant experience in a senior administrative position
  • Significant experience in a post with operational and administrative responsibility
  • Sound financial abilities with a proven record of budget management
  • Proven experience of staff management
  • Excellent skills in MS Word and Excel
  • Excellent record keeping and report writing skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to work effectively with a variety of nationalities and personalities at all levels within the MRC Gambia Unit
  • Enthusiastic, energetic, diplomatic, tactful, flexible, adaptable and self-motivated with heads-up, hands-on management style, and ability to lead by example
  • Ability to multi-task, manage a large workload and adapt to new situations quickly
  • Ability to motivate staff
  • Ability to take tough decisions when required
  • Willingness to live in a rural African setting with limited facilities

Although not essential, experience in a health related research  field and experience of working in Africa in a rural area would be an advantage.
