Programme Officers (Code: PO0412)

A not-for-profit organisation that support sustainable development of farmers and agricultural production systems in West Africa is seeking suitably qualified candidates to fill the following positions in its, Ghana country programme. The organisation is the West African representative of an international network which plays a lead role in a growing global movement advocating and supporting sustainable and responsible production and trade through the promotion of voluntary standards. The voluntary standards are being used as a tool to support cocoa farmers to improve their income and livelihoods.

Job Description

  1. Supporting Certification Specialists to provide technical support services to the various projects with focus on activities and processes and required to achieve certification against voluntary standards
  2. Supporting the Country Programme Manager to prepare reports on project activities, maintaining files about each project update/progress reports on the various projects
  3. Use interactions with projects partners to informally monitor progress and provide feedback to the Country Programme Manager
  4. Supporting the project partners to organize and assess their internal control systems by providing best practice guidance, and using initiative to verify the creditability of the systems
  5. Supporting the Certification Specialists to develop relevant and appropriate adult training material (to facilitate the process of certification of farmers), to be used by both farmer trainers and trainers of trainers;
  6. Help implementing partners to develop project plans and write project reports;
  7. Contributing to GPS mapping activities for the cocoa projects, mainly by training field officers on the use of GPS;
  8. Supporting the implementation of Monitoring and Evaluation activities to assess the impact of both the projects and voluntary standards, and on cocoa farmers and their communities
  9. Report to the Country Programme Manager;
  10. Plus any other tasks assigned as and when necessary

 

Required Skills or Experience

  1. Educated to at least first degree level in agricultural science, development studies, social sciences or related fields
  2. At least 2 years professional experience in sustainable agriculture and/or the cocoa sector
  3. Practical experience of implementing development projects
  4. Able to write project proposals and reports
  5. Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to work both independently and contribute in teams
  6. Fluent in English and ability to speak Akan will be an added advantage

Desirable:

  • Strong understanding of the social and environmental challenges in cocoa production and trade
  • Capable of managing information and inter-organisational relationships
  • Experience of smallholder group certification of agricultural products
