The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS, www.aims.ac.za) is an innovative post-graduate centre for education, research and outreach has achieved global recognition since opening its first centre in South Africa in 2003. AIMS offers a number of educational programmes highlighted by its 10-month postgraduate Diploma in mathematical Sciences, which provides an intensive and broad education to over 50 top African students each year, and prepares them for leadership careers in academia, governance and industry.

Based on the success of the first AIMS centre, the AIMS Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS-NEI, www.nexteinstein.org) was launched with the mission of enabling Africa’s brightest students to flourish as independent thinkers, problem solvers and innovators capable of propelling Africa’s future scientific, educational and economic self-sufficiency. As part of this network, AIMS-Ghana has been created and is establishing itself in preparation for accepting its first batch of students in the 2012-13 academic year

Job Description

Duty Station: (Accra or Cape Coast/Saltpond area to be finalised)

Reporting:
Reporting directly to AIMS-Ghana Director and/or AIMS-Ghana and/or AIMS-Ghana Steering Committee. Working closely with and technical supervision by AIMS-NEI secretariat in South Africa

Job Responsibilities:

Work with AIMS-Ghana steering committee and AIMS-NEI staff to plan, prepare and launch AIMS-Ghana
Undertake all administrative tasks including filing of paperwork, preparation of reports, meeting with potential contractors
Build and implement a robust finance, accounting and reporting system
Build and implement a system of HR and procurement procedures
Establish bank accounts, legal permissions, develop MoUs and other such typical legal tasks for a start-up organisation
Work closely with construction and architecture firms to develop plans for the AIMS-Ghana
Work with AIMS-NEI staff to develop and update the AIMS-Ghana business plan
Prepare a monthly operational and finance report for circulation to the steering committee and AIMS-NEI secretariat
Represent AIMS-Ghana to local, regional and international stakeholers

Required Skills or Experience

At least 5 years of project management experience in the Ghanaian context
Extensive experience in responsible managing financial and other resources
Reporting writing experience
Ability to represent AIMS-Ghana to national and international bodies
Good computer literacy and ability to utilise typical MS Office tools
Ability to travel across Ghana and internationally as required
Willingness to workin the AIMS spirit and under take tasks as necessary
The ideal candidates will also possess the following attributes:
Experience in construction management
Experience in academic environments
Experience in growing new operations or working in start-up organisations
Some knowledge of French
