Duties and Responsibilities

Strategy and Operations

  • Ensure budgets and operating plans are drawn up
  • Understand the business strategy and know your numbers
  • Run the business day-to-day by producing and directing sound plans, spotting problems by reviewing budget variances, and core activity gaps daily, weekly and monthly
  • Spot opportunities early, and respond to them aggressively
  • Establish goals and ensure the organization stretches to achieve them
  • Continue to set high and demanding performance standards
  • Set a personal example in terms of work ethic, obvious commitment to the business and consistent quality of your own effort
  • Set deadlines and enforce them for your managers and for all critical organizational activities – closing banks sales, implementing projects and routine customer activation campaigns
  • Get deeply involved in articulating and entrenching desirable company values – that is, “what it is like to work here”

Resource Management

  • Allocate resources efficiently to revenue streams that produce high returns and keep an eye on unprofitable activities
  • Constantly search for unproductive assets to get them up to par or off the books and always strive to improve productivity
  • Perform tests and carefully segment rollouts to test the market and control costs. When sure the idea will work, go to war to implement with speed

Develop Star Performance

  • Attract talented managers, develop them, and keep them challenged and effectively deployed
  • Make the tough calls it takes to upgrade your organization’s performance
  • Use challenging job assignments to speed up the development of high-potential managers and employees generally. Deal with blockages that get in the way of putting the best people to challenging assignments that promise high returns
  • Get line managers deeply involved in the performance and productivity upgrading process by putting in place periodic tough-minded appraisals of individuals and teams across the organisation
  • Link rewards to performance to motivate staff

Build a Community

  • Look for the simplest ways to do things, which usually means fewer layers, bigger jobs and broader responsibilities
  • Get personally involved in solving important problems
  • Organize around people rather than concepts and principals, leveraging the team’s expertise
  • Routinely bring your managers together to talk about the business, budgets and variances, to get multiple inputs on important projects, and to line up their support. Do check-ins with the entire organisation periodically as well
  • Routinely visit customers to obtain direct feedback on your company’s products and services
