The Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives is a mandated agency by the Ministry of Health to provide training in eight specialty areas in the levels of Membership (3- years) and Associate Membership (1-year) for nurses and midwives in Ghana and beyond. In 2015, the College entered into a partnership with the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) Canada, to scale up Paediatric Nursing Education in Ghana through the development and delivery of a 1-year Associate program in Paediatric Nursing. With the full support of the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service,
this partnership builds on the post-basic pediatric nursing program delivered in partnership with SickKids at the University of Ghana from 2011-2015.

Job Description

Job Title: Paediatric Clinical Educators, Full time on the Paediatric Nursing Education Partnership (PNEP)

Classification: Technical Person
Reports to: PNEP Clinical Coordinator
Location: Tamale and Accra Training Site
Salary: Negotiable
Travel: Regularly within Ghana, occasionally abroad

The College and its partner seek to recruit Clinical Educators for the Tamale training site. The clinical educator will collaborate, support and work with GCNM and SickKids Educators/Faculty and other members of the technical team for the competencies and clinical skills development of residents within Paediatric Nursing in both the clinical and classroom setting. The Clinical Educator will ensure adherence to quality and optimal practice standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Collaborates with Faculty members, nursing leaders, nursing preceptors, medical specialists, other patient care staff, and unit management in the planning, implementation, and delivery of educational curricula in the classroom, skills lab & clinical setting
• Serves as a host, teacher, and mentor at assigned clinical site
• Ensures Paediatric Associate Residents’ preparation for their clinical activities
• Works with facility based preceptors to prepare patient assignment prior to the arrival of Paediatric Associate Residents on the nursing ward, reflective of Residents level of expertise and learning objectives
• Works with facility based preceptors to orient Paediatric Associate Residents to the pediatric department/unit
• Encourages an evidence based approach to pediatric nursing practice
• Sets & reviews Paediatric Associate Residents’ objectives for clinical and determine approaches to meeting them
• Facilitates competency and clinical skills development among Paediatirc Associate Residents
• Provides Paediatric Associate Residents with ongoing verbal feedback and written assessment on progress using standardized tools, based on clinical educator’s observation of clinical performance, assessment of competencies and patient care documentation, giving direction and time for improvement
• Organizes and facilitates daily debriefing and weekly clinical conferences within pediatrics and newborn care to foster discussion and reflection to support clinical learning among Paediatric Associate Residents
• Supports Paediatric Associate Residents to providing total patient nursing care for children and newborns including patients with complex and uncommon diagnosis
• Provides educational leadership to enhance pediatric care within established clinical protocols and guidelines
• Monitors trends and implements educational strategies to ensure compliance with quality standards and parameters
• Empowers Paediatric Associate Residents to be critical thinkers and problem solvers but intervenes where appropriate to manage situations beyond the residents’ ability
• Educates Paediatric Associate Residents and other technical and patient care staff in the use of new equipment, supplies, and instruments
• Promotes workplace safety
• Empowers Residents to be able to identify ineffective systems and processes internally and externally that affect quality child health care delivery and utilize quality improvement approaches to facilitate systems and process change
• Facilitates professional socialization
• Facilitates interpersonal communication among students and all members of the health team
• Provides support and mentorship to facility based preceptors
• Works with the Clinical Coordinator to coordinate clinical education and training for assigned Associate Residents
• Participates regularly in specialty related CPDs to ensure optimal performance Skills Lab
• Plan and facilitate learning in the skills lab through skills stations and simulated scenarios to promote the Paediatric Associate Residents’ consolidation of knowledge, skills and critical thinking
• Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of skills lab
• Assist the Clinical Coordinator in the development of protocols and guidelines for the Skills Lab Classroom
• Facilitate learning activities and discussion
• With the support of Faculty, prepare and teach lectures as assigned
• Assist with resident assessment and evaluation including marking scripts
• Assist with curriculum and content revisions as required
• Ensure strong understanding of the Associate Program in Paediatric Nursing curriculum and competencies to promote the integration of theory and practice during the clinical practicum

Qualification Required & Experience

• A full-time Nurse Educator with experience and specialized skills in Paediatric Nursing, Newborn Care, and Community health
• Have passion in clinical teaching and working with Residents
• Hold an active license as a registered nurse and must be of good standing with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
• At least 5years of work experience that can be demonstrated to be applicable to the duties listed in the job description
• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or Midwifery
• Previous experience in clinical instructing or as a preceptor is an added advantage

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required:

• Ability to work 45 hours per week based upon your personal scheduling needs
• Possibility for alternative scheduling – evenings shifts and weekends
• Possibility of maintaining casual (part-time) duties at your current post to continue engagement in active patient care can be discussed with GCNM and current employer
• Ability to plan, implement and evaluate patient care and to support residents in refining their knowledge and skill
• Ability to provide operational guidance and leadership to project staff in area of specialty
• Ability to assess educational needs and support to design curricula and education material to address those needs
• Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders on an international project, and remain adaptable to different cultural values and various working styles
• Demonstrates leadership skills in problem solving, decision making, priority setting, delegation of responsibility and accountability
• Professional and Technical leadership skills within paediatrics and newborn practice
• Advanced nursing or midwifery skills in paediatrics and newborn care
• Highly developed verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively at all levels in a collaborative team environment
• Thorough knowledge and understanding of clinical protocol, procedures, and standards within paediatrics and newborn care
• Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements
