Job Description

Job Title: Ghana Local Researcher

Overview:  IBTCI seeks a Ghanaian researcher who specializes in politics and/or security in Ghana to participate in a violent extremism (VE) risk assessment of Ghana – including a literature review and field research. This assessment is being funded by USAID West Africa’s Peace through Evaluation, Learning and Adapting (PELA) Activity. The purpose of this activity is to support USAID/West Africa to be a more effective, efficient and adaptable operating unit in achieving the development objective of strengthening systems of non-violent conflict management in West Africa.  This is a four week consultancy beginning on or about May 27, 2019. This position is open to Ghanaian nationals or residents only.

This position is contingent on USAID funding.

Responsibilities

Using your  subject matter skills, perform tasks on specific task orders and/or contracts.  Tasks could include, but not be limited to:

  • Contributes to a literature review on risk factors to VE or violent conflict in Ghana
  • Collects primary source evidence on Ghana, according to the VE risk assessment framework
  • Collaborates with the PELA Research Director and the Lead Researcher to develop key informant (KII) and focus group discussion (FGD) questionnaires and protocols
  • Advises the assessment team on the Ghanaian requirements for conducting international research and ensures that the team meet all legal requirements and gather all necessary official permissions to conduct the work
  • Transcribes FGD and KII notes and translating as needed
  • Facilitates introductions with key informant interviewees and ensures that the assessment logistics coordinator has all necessary contact information to be able to schedule interviews
  • Advises the assessment team on the composition of focus group discussions (FGDs)
  • Collects key informant interviews and FGDs with the assessment team in assigned locations in Ghana
  • Assists the lead researcher in analyzing the data
  • Assists the lead researcher in drafting a 15 to 25-page report of the assessment and findings
  • Other duties as assigned.

Serve in the above consultant capacity to support the IBTCI technical practices of Crisis, Conflict & Governance, Agriculture & Food Security & Economic, Education & Growth and Global Health and/or Business Development divisions.

  • This position does not authorize/require the consultant to directly communicate with IBTCI clients.
  • This position does not authorize/require the consultant to have decision making authority on final work product.

Qualifications

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Expertise in Ghanaian politics and/or security is required; additional expertise in violent extremism or violent conflict is preferred

Minimum Requirements:

  • 2-3 years of research experience collecting interviews and FGDs in Ghana
  • Oral and written fluency in English, as well as oral fluency in an additional major Ghanaian language
  • Research skills – such as the ability to conduct literature reviews, use bibliographic software such as Zotero, attention to detail, ability to collect “off-the-shelf” data, and conducting interviews and FGDs
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to communicate well through written work with diverse stakeholders, including donors, beneficiaries, and local officials
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Past experience and demonstrated success in working with a cross-cultural teams of researchers in the field

Education:  Master’s degree in international relations, politics and governance, peacebuilding, security studies, international development, or related field required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:  This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Travel:  Travel within Ghana is required.
