The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), hosted by the International Water Management Institute’s (IWMI’s) West Africa office in Accra, Ghana seeks to recruit a research officer to provide data collection and management, data analysis, economic modeling and scientific writing research support to ILRI livestock policy and strategic foresight modeling. The position will be based at IWMI’s West Africa Office in Accra, Ghana and will report to a Senior Agricultural Economist in ILRI’s Policies, Institutions and Livelihoods Program through IWMI’s Country Representative – Ghana.

ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org.

Job Description

Job Title: Research Officer – Livestock Policy and Foresight

Duties And Responsibilities

Contribute to data protocol development, collection and analyses, model design and implementation, agricultural/livestock systems and value chain modelling;

    • Collate and analyze national statistics such as those published by FAO, the World Bank, and countries’ economics statistics offices, to provide cogent analyses on countries’ agriculture\livestock and food systems;
    • Collect and analyze primary data using household surveys, focus group discussions, and other procedure for obtaining relevant agricultural/livestock/food system information;
    • Engage with local researchers, government units, statistical offices and others to obtain data for economic analysis and to validate and augment primary data;
    • Conduct guided literature reviews and contribute to scientific research writing;
    • Proper documentation of the data, analyses and/or model co-design that they contribute.

Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Essential

Advertisement
    • MSc/MPhil degree in Agricultural Economics or equivalent
    • Degree coursework or previous research in agricultural/livestock science
    • Two or more years of experience post master’s degree

Desirable

    • Previous use of STATA, SPSS or similar analytical package
    • Experience using GAMS or other mathematical programming
    • Knowledge of GIS or other spatial analysis software

Essential

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    • Intermediate to advanced level quantitative analysis/modeling
    • Demonstrable knowledge of livestock systems in developing countries
    • Good written and oral communication in English
    • Quantitative data collection and analysis

Desirable

    • Knowledge of partial and/or general equilibrium modelling
    • Qualitative data analysis
    • French and/or a local Ghanaian language
