The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is looking for a highly motivated researcher with exceptional capacity and a deep understanding of hydrology and water resources to develop a research portfolio on hydrological processes and water resources management at landscape and basin levels, and provide leadership and strategic direction for similar research activities in West Africa and elsewhere.

Job Title: Senior Researcher, Hydrology and Water Resources

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct research to build an understanding across a range of issues related to hydrology, water resources modeling, environmental flows, basin water allocation, natural and built infrastructure, and ecosystem services.
  • Lead interdisciplinary research projects, overseeing financial and administrative issues, such as leading an interdisciplinary team, partner engagement, and timely and accurate reporting. Using research findings to engage next-users and ensure uptake of research results by policy makers and other stakeholders.
  • Provide leadership in conceptual and empirical research related to improving water resources management in West Africa across a range of scales, and under existing and possible future conditions including those resulting from climate change, land-use change and increasing hydropower development.
  • Analyze basin and sub-basin water resources management interventions in the context of the ecosystem services they affect and/or provide.
  • Identify new research trends and niches, and develop new research proposals for projects addressing important hydrology and water management issues in West Africa.
  • Initiate, develop and sustain collaboration with research partners, governments and donors in West Africa and elsewhere in Africa, as well as in Europe, Asia and the USA.
  • Contribute to relevant research portfolios of the CGIAR Research Programs on Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE) and Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), particularly in relation to water resources management systems and decision making under climate variability and climate change.
  • Prepare research reports, journal articles and other scientific manuscripts (e.g., policy guidelines, policy briefs, etc.) for dissemination and uptake of research results.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • PhD in hydrology, water resources management, hydro-ecology or a related discipline
  • Experience in a broad field of water resources management with a focus on interactions in the water-energy-food-environment nexus in Africa.
  • Experience in developing and leading research teams with multiple partners and disciplines from both advanced research institutes and developing countries
  • Experience in analyses of hydrological, water resources and meteorological data.
  • Knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS) and other spatial data software used for hydrological purposes.
  • Experience in diverse hydrological and water resources analyses models, tools and techniques, and their applications in the basin context.
  • Conduct fieldwork and overall ability to work in data-scarce environments.
  • Ability to develop fundable research proposals.
  • Proven ability to write and publish research findings.
  • Proven ability to work in multicultural teams.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
