Job Description

Unit: UN Millennium Villages Project (MVP)

Location: Manso Nkwanta, Amansie West District – Ashanti Religion

Reports to: The Cluster Manager, MVP

Objective and Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Cluster Manager, the logistics coordinator will provide logistics and transport support to the Millennium Villages Project (MVP) Value Chain Development sub-sector and be required to support the cluster approach for MVP. More specifically, the incumbent will be responsible to manage start-up and coordination of fresh aim fruit logistics and act as a focal point for supply and logistics management from main agricultural commodities

Basic Function: He/she will:

Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning and Implementation:

  • Assess existing logistics operational capacity and requirements for main agricultural value chains in MVP cluster and other MVP programs; Working closely with the Value Chain Development and Agriculture coordinators, and be in charge of identifying key logistics gaps/bottlenecks; Manage start-up operational logistics support and purpose a common operational strategy and logistics operational plan for supply of main agricultural commodities and inputs
  • Provide active and timely field support to oil palm producers, farmer-based organizations and MVP team on areas related to logistics and supply management
  • Develop cost-effective logistics solutions, including collection and delivery systems, for main agricultural commodities in the MVP cluster. This includes fleshing out ideas to be taken to investors, selecting proper technologies, developing pricing models, identifying potential markets, developing business plans, P/Ls and cash flows; Initiate or formalize logistics-coordination with private buyers, input suppliers, government counterparts, and donors
  • Contribute towards the development of a value chain developmengt strategy for main agricultural commodities in the MVP cluster;
  • Plan, manage and oversee implementation of logistics solutions to ensure achievement of performance targets for all major projects
  • Provide transport and logistics information to FBOs and community members to facilitate access to new or enhanced market opportunities; unsure coordination with other sector coordinators to capture synergies across sectors
  • Organize the collection of data on transport costs, income generation and other factors to evaluate the success of projects and gather information to inform strategy
  • Review and update present product specifications with partners
  • Review requirements and supply options for main agricultural commodities in the cluster

Capacity Development:

  • Assist farmers and other interest groups in the MVP cluster to income together as Farmer-based Organizations (FBOs) and Coorperatives based on demand, to achieve critical mass needed to access markets. This includes actively supporting linkages between FBOs and different services providers
  • design and implement trainings to strengthen different capacities of FBOs to be able to operate effectively and provide high quality and cost-effective services, reach and enter into legal agreements, purchase inputs and connect markets
  • Strengthen managerial capacities of FBOs to oversee day-to-day management of projects, logistics and operations
  • Identify and develop the skills of potential entrepreneurs, and guide them through the development and execution of business plans

Strategic Partnerships and Alliances:

  • Ensure that information is shared with arriving companies and organizations
  • Build, promote and manage institutional partnerships and relationships with business partners, including financial institutions and service providers, Local Government and Regional Ministeries, and key community actors and stakeholders
  • Support resource mobilization, efforts of MVP at the local and regional levels
  • Reach out and seize possible fund-raising opportunities and service provision among local business leaders and/or business and firms for support (programmatic, investment, etc)
  • Build strong partnerships with micro-finance institutions and other rural credit options to support the establishment and expansion of businesses

Reporting and Knowledge Management:

  • Contribute to the program knowledge management efforts with technical briefings, and other reports, to record methods being used, share experiences, identify good practices, and pinpoint the gaps in knowledge in the implementation of project activities
  • Work in close coordination with the Earth Institute (EI) Columbia University staff and Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Centre staff whose role is to support the technical dimension of the implementation of the MVs in the agriculture and value chain development
  • Provide reports that can be shared with investors and the larger MV community
  • Maintain matrix for cluster input and output supplies list, routs, transport costs, service levels, frequency of service, quantities delivered and prices paid

Minimum Qualification:

  • Master degree in logistics, Business Administration, Emergency Operations or related field
  • At least 7 years of progressive field experience in the successful design and implementation of innovative supply and demand chain management
  • Experience in development of business plans and feasibility studies for rural enterprises
  • Proven problem solving and organizational skills, flexibility and calm under pressure
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills in English and the main language
  • Must have excellent organisational, analytical, communication and interpersonal skills, be a team player and detail-oriented
  • A good ability to lead and motivate people and to have a proactive approach to ensure that plans, systems and information flows are effective
  • Demonstrated ability to compile and reports results of research or management activities
  • Highly motivated with a professional background in agricultural and environment
  • Computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
