To integrate technical studies, programmes and analysis of geology, exploration, evaluation, and production with the business objectives and processes of mine planning, mining production and mineral processing to maximize the profitability of Obuasi.

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Manager – Geology

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

General

  • Deliver safety in design and appropriate safety practices in line with AGA’s values.
  • Make the necessary input as part of Obuasi management in developing the long-term strategy for the mine.
  • Operate in accordance with the company values, policies, standards and procedures.
  • Effectively lead a multidisciplinary team of professionals and support staff.
  • Build a positive team culture and enables individuals to achieve their full potential.
  • Supervision, coaching, mentoring and performance management of team
  • Build and maintain positive internal and external relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Show proficiency in a wide range of exploration and geological development methodologies.
  • Manage multiple early stage to advanced exploration projects.
  • Be proficient in risk assessment, contractor management, budgeting and project management.
  • Demonstrate leadership in safety, stewardship of the environment, cultural heritage management and effective stakeholder engagement.
  • Act as the Competent Person: Mineral Resources for Obuasi Gold Mine.
  • Apply creativity and extensive knowledge of mineral system models, regional prospectivity, exploration methodologies and competitor activity to identify new opportunities and targets
  • Develop a long term (+10 year) exploration plan to support future expansion or extension of the life of Obuasi.
  • Identify and address gaps in geology process and teams to improve on outcomes
  • Develop an effective 1 to 3 year strategic plan, annual business plan and budget
  • Prioritise targets and maximising opportunity for discovery of Mineral Resource.
  • Effectively take consider, safety, permitting, environment, cultural heritage and community in the development & implementation of exploration and geology programmes.
  • Lead risk assessments to identify key SHEC and business risks and establishing controls to mitigate those risks.
  • Understand legislative requirements and ensures that approvals and permits are in place prior to exploration.
  • Optimises use of available Mineral Resource while controlling costs and minimising both planned and unplanned dilution.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and operational effectiveness.
  • Schedules work programmes and manage tenement portfolio to ensure satisfaction of financial commitments and security of tenure.
  • Effectively monitor the implementation of work programmes to ensure they are conducted in accordance with company values, policies, standards, procedures, relevant laws, regulations, conditions, local cultural norms and third party agreements.
  • Monitor geology to ensure appropriate controls are in place and are effective in managing identified risks.
  • Review proposed exploration and other geological programmes to ensure that appropriate methodologies are applied.
  • Lead project reviews and make clear decisions based on results.
  • Manage team members and contractors.
  • Lead work programmes that improve the NPV of the operation.
  • Determine departmental budgets in line with Business Plan requirements.
  • Manage cost to authorised budgets and provide forecasts.
  • Identify business value drivers and develop plans to address these.
  • Put in place Confidentiality Agreements that satisfy AGA investment criteria and that potentially add to the NPV of Obuasi.
  • Develop KPIs for the team and measures to these.
  • Identify and manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholder.
  • Create relevant links and associations with key influencers inside or external to AGA.
  • Take internal and external stakeholder expectations into account when making decisions.
  • Make decisions that bring the highest NPV value to AGA and stakeholders.
  • Monitor the collection and management of relevant data to a high standard of quality assurance and control.
  • Support internal and external audit processes.
  • Interpret complex data to make sound objective assessments.
  • Prepare accurate high quality internal and statutory reports including the Competent Persons report for Mineral Resources.
  • Present programme results to peers and supervisors, including corporate or external stakeholders.
  • At least a Bachelor’s degree in Geology.
  • A post graduate qualification in Geostatistics or Mineral Resource management would be advantageous.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years experiences of which five (5+) years should be at a senior management level.
  • The minimum 10 years of experience should be primarily in gold and underground operations.
  • The experience, organisation membership and competency to act as the Competent Person for Mineral Resource.
  • Multi-disciplinary knowledge of Mining and Mineral processing.
  • Significant experience in mine geology including production reconciliation.
  • The experience, organisation membership and competency to act as the Competent Person for Mineral Resource.
  • Demonstrated success in exploration and management.
  • Substantial knowledge of mineral system models and exploration methodologies.
  • Demonstrated understanding of regulatory requirements for the applicable jurisdictions.
  • Substantial experience in contractor management.
  • Contract management.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Advanced interpretive and target generation skills.
  • Budget management experience to manage departmental budget and multi-million-dollar programs.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and substantial managerial experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership in the management of safety, environment, cultural heritage and stakeholder engagement.
