Job Description

Job Title: Environment Officer – Compliance

About This Role:

Coordinate all environmental aspects relating to environment compliance to ensure all related environmental policies, procedures and standards, Ghanaian laws and regulations as well as Newmont Corporate Environmental Standards are complied with at all times.
In This Role You Will:
Environmental Compliance

Track compliance of operational activities and report non-compliances immediately to Environment Supervisor.
Develop corrective action plans and track to completion, where required.
Analyse data and ensure non-compliances are immediately reported to the Environment Supervisor for investigation.
Identify trends in environmental monitoring data.
Report all non-compliance issues immediately.
Assist in managing the environmental data system by continuously collating and validating environmental data and updating the database from field monitoring programs and from results of laboratory analysis.
Actively participate in environmental awareness program for all Ahafo North Employees and Contractors.
Maintain compliance data files through proven document control procedures.
Review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for various environmental activities.

Environmental Reporting

Manage data collection from NGGL Operations departments to support preparation of required reports/documents to satisfy legal, financial, and regulatory reporting requirements.
Comply with the compilation of regular reports assigned to this position (EPA and WRC reports) as required.

Audits and Inspection

Conduct environmental audits and inspections, both internal and external (vendor facilities and contractors).
Assist in the coordination of site visits of the Environmental Protection Agency, Mineral Commission, Water Resources Commission and/or other (regulatory) agencies for environmental inspections and audits as well as third party auditors.
Participate in environmental risk assessment process.

Team Leadership

Review monitoring schedules.
Supervise Environment Technician(s) – Compliance.

Safety

Report all incidents and accidents in the work group to enable management to identify areas for improvement in work practices.
Demonstrate leadership in safety and comply with Newmont Ghana HSLP policies and procedures that involve but are not limited to Safety Inspections, Safety Training, Annual Refresher, Safety Talks, Incident Reporting and Investigation etc.
Present information accurately at safety/environment meetings.
Assist Business Partners in undertaking job hazard analysis.
Your Training, Skills & Experience Checklist:
Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):

First degree in Environmental Science or related fields.

Additional Knowledge:

Knowledge of Ghanaian Environmental Regulations as they apply to mining.
Senior HSE Officer Competency in Minerals and Mining (Health, Safety and Technical) Regulation (LI2182).
Thorough understanding of Environment Management Systems.

Experience:

Minimum of 5 years environmental management experience working in the mining or related industrial operations.
Experienced working with ISO4001 or similar Environmental Management Systems.

Strong presentation, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.

Majority of the incumbent’s job requires daily inspections which encompasses driving long distances through operational areas and all over the mining lease with some areas being remote and isolated.
