Job Description

Job Title: Superintendent – Geotech and Hydrology

About This Role

  • To collaborate with management to determine tactical strategies for the Geotechnical and Hydrological functional priorities and direct, coordinate and review work associated with these priorities.

In This Role You Will

Geotechnical Oversight

  • Oversee design and implement short-to-long term geotechnical programs to meet Life of Mine needs and mitigate risks to operations.
  • Drive excellence in geotechnical risk assessments and hazard identifications.
  • Establish initiative-taking approaches to geotechnical risk management.
  • Oversee the management and appropriate communication of identified geotechnical risks.
  • Commission and implement a ground control management strategy.
  • Establish and maintain effective slope displacement monitoring through the installation of detection systems in pit walls.
  • Design optimal slopes for the pit walls and associated infrastructure and recommend ideal gradients for construction.
  • Propose and manage geotechnical and hydrological drilling programs.
  • Provide appropriate guidance and expertise into geotechnical and hydrological inputs into the short and long-term mine plans, as well as ongoing mining production.
  • Ensure the stability of the ground (i.e. pit, infrastructure, TSF (Tailings Storage Facility), waste dumps, stockpiles).
  • Apply geotechnical principles in maintaining the integrity of the dump.
  • Conceptualize feasible solutions to address and stabilize the geological state of the Open Pit Mine ground site.
  • Contribute to improvements in controlled blasting outcomes.

Hydrology Oversight

  • Oversee the design and implement short-to-long term hydrological engineering programs and activities to meet Life of Mine needs and mitigate risks to operations.
  • Conceptualize the development of a robust water management plan.
  • Execute the Mine Water Management plan, according to Mine Business Plans.
  • Develop an effective groundwater management program.
  • Encourage the involvement of both geotechnical and hydrology groups in the management of the Tailing Storage Facility.
  • Oversee the continuous dewatering of the Open Pits, according to established tactical plans.
  • Oversee the interception of the water table and predict water levels to model data for Pit longevity, stability and sustainability purposes.

Project Management

  • Review geotechnical and hydrological objectives and priorities regularly, within the annual framework of Newmont’s Success Factors program.

Staff Management

  • Manage allocated staff member(s) by:
    • leading a team of eight Senior and Junior Geotechnical and Hydrological Engineers in the execution of tasks.
    • training, coaching, mentoring, and developing direct reports, particularly in technical and leadership skills.
    • assisting with professional career planning and development of subordinates.
    • conducting performance appraisals.
    • disciplining poor performance or actions.
    • approving leave.
    • enhancing communication with staff through regular feedback, contact, meetings, and briefings.

Additional Responsibilities

Stakeholder Communication

  • Liaise with Mine Engineers regarding communication on established plans for inclusion into production figure factoring.
  • Maintain ongoing clear channels of communication with Short Term Planning, Long Term Planning and Mine Engineering divisions.
  • Maintain ongoing clear channels of communication and friendly relations with MINCOM, through the NGGL External Relations Department.

Budget and Cost Control Management

  • Determine geotechnical and hydrological capital project budget requirements for the Mine Engineering area.
  • Obtain sign off and approval of capital project budgets from the Chief Mining Engineer.
  • Monitor the financial performance of the Geotechnical and Hydrology areas against established budgets and report on any detected variances to management.
  • Work towards attaining active cost containments in the short-term and the medium term.
  • Manage Geotechnical and Hydrology’s’ respective expenditures within the approved budget and sign-off limits to maintain effective cost controls and savings.
  • Manage project expenditures to apply and uphold sound financial practices.
  • Obtain necessary council approvals to proceed with the initiation of capital projects.

Health, Safety and Environment

  • Align the Geotechnical and Hydrological functions with the Health, Safety, Environment and Social Responsibility requirements under Newmont Ghana’s Integrated Management System, Vision and Values.
  • Deliver own prescribed outcomes and / or provide support services, by applying Newmont’s Health, Safety and Environment systems, policies and protocols.
  • Accept personal responsibility for the health and safety of all Mine Engineers under or assigned to his / her supervision.
  • Meet mining objectives and conform to Newmont mining standards, geotechnical and operational physical standards to promote safe mining operations within legislative guidelines.
  • Oversee compliance with all relevant legal, environmental and occupational health, safety and risk management standards and best practices.
  • Assure that safety standards are adhered to.
  • Plan, schedule and coordinate safety meetings.
  • Attend monthly safety inspections and meetings.
  • Accept personal responsibility for the health and safety of every employee under or assigned to his/her supervision.

Your Training, Skills & Experience Checklist

Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Civil, Mine or Geological).

Additional Knowledge

  • Certified Rock Engineer: MINCOM.
  • Member of the Ghana Institute of Engineering.
  • Member of the Ghana Institute of Geoscience.

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 – 12 years’ experience in an Open Pit Mining environment, with specialized focus on Geotechnical Engineering, Dewatering Systems and/or Hydrology, of which 5 – 7 years should be in a supervisory capacity.
  • Extensive experience in senior geotechnical roles.
  • Experience in groundwater testing and drilling programs.
  • Experience in managing multidisciplinary teams.

  • Deep proficiency in Software capabilities.

  • Advanced communication (written and verbal) and people skills.
