Kinross is a Canadian-based gold mining company with mines and projects in Canada, the United States, Brazil, Chile, Russia, Ghana and Mauritania, employing approximately 9,300 people worldwide. Our core purpose is to lead the world in generating value through responsible mining.

Chirano is located in southwestern Ghana, approximately 100 kilometres southwest of Kumasi, Ghana’s second largest city. The mine is within the Bibiani gold belt and consists of 11 deposits. Open pit and underground ore are processed at the Chirano plant. The capacity of the mill is approximately 3.5 million tonnes per annum. Processing involves crushing, ball mill grinding, leaching, and CIL.

Job Description

Job Title: Principal Geologist

To contribute to the execution of the strategy for the geology team, ensuring alignment with the organization’s overall strategy. Facilitates the growth of the team to maximize operational efficiencies and profitability and cultivate stakeholder and employee satisfaction. Undertakes projects to optimize performance in an area / department of geology and makes recommendations on current and emerging practices and technologies that are a key source of competitive advantage. Provides expertise while facilitating the training and mentoring of employees.

Job Responsibilities

• Responsibilities may be focused in one of the following areas of geology: mine, exploration, projects or geographic information systems (GIS)
• Oversees activities related to the researching, analysis and interpretation of geological information and ensures that service and / or operating standards are met (internally and / or externally); ensures regulatory compliance with respect to mineral resource and reserve estimate
• Advises on a variety of internal and / or external requests such as identifying and analyzing business requirements and the implications for the team; identifies gaps and implements agree upon solutions; making recommendations for opportunities that could maximize efficiency and productivity of the operation
• May lead and manage a team in the geological department responsible for executing exploration / operations strategies which would involve establishing project plans and milestones, analyzing risks, developing budgets and delegating work assignments
• Assists in the consolidation of the company’s resources and reserve estimates at the corporate level and assists in establishing processes related to geology and resource modeling; actively monitors the developments in the industry related to resource modeling and reporting
• Provides geological and resource modeling support to operations and development projects and participates in due diligence reviews and compilation of engineering studies
• Understands surface and underground mine engineering, metallurgical testing, mineral processing, cost estimation, construction methodologies, geographical variations in regulations, cultural practices, cost structures and operational requirements and consistently applies to all technical and evaluation situations
• Communicates geology-related information including the provision of information on operating standards, compliance requirements and policies to key stakeholders
• Acts as a change agent and project sponsor for metallurgy initiatives; models organizational values, sets the cultural tone, and prioritizes business goals
• Identifies strategies and key performance goals and acts as an advisor to direct reports and / or more junior team members

Education and Experience

• University degree in Geology or related field preferred
• Additional specialized education of up to 4 years
• Formal professional or technical registration in appropriate area of expertise preferred

• Generally more than 8 years of related work experience or equivalent
• Previous experience in mining industry is preferred
• Geological and resource modeling experience



• Previous work experience using Vulcan and/or Datamine modeling software
• Aptitude and interest in regulatory affairs and research development

Reporting Relationships

• Serves as a senior resource to geologists and other support or technical work unit
• Typically reports into the Chief Geologist / Exploration Manager / Technical Services Manager
