Job Description

Duration: One Year

As part of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF), covering the period 2006-2011, six UN Agencies have developed a programme addressing human security challenges in northern Ghana. The Joint GoG/United Nations Human Security Programme entitled “Enhancing Human Security through Developing Local Capacity for Holistic Community – Based Conflict Prevention in Northern Ghana” is a joint initiative of the Government of Ghana and six UN Agencies: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) lead, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), World Food Programme (WFP), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the United Nations University (UNU).

Reporting to and working under the supervision of the Head of the Governance Unit and working closely with the UN Resident Co-ordinator and UN Country Team, the Programme Manager will be responsible for the implementation of the Human Security Programme with responsibility for:

  • Human Security Programme Management and Implementation
  • Leading the Programme’s efforts to develop in-country human security capacity and mainstreaming of human security in national development frameworks
  • Human Security Advisory and Coordination Support
  • Knowledge Management

Remuneration: In accordance with UN Guidelines
 

Required Skills or Experience

  • A minimum of Master’s degree in social science (human security, political science, sociology, development planning, development economics, international relations and/or international development ) with at least a minimum 10 years of progressive experience working on human security and/or holistic development including project management at national and international levels and familiarity with programme issues surrounding conflict prevention an important asset

Competencies:

  • Demonstrates integrity by modelling the UN’s values and ethical standards; Promotes the vision, mission, and strategic goals of UNDP; Displays cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability and treats all people fairly without favouritism
  • Strong IT skills and ability to lead implementation of new systems (business side), and affect staff behavioral/attitudinal change
  • Focuses on impact and result for the client and responds positively to feedback and consistently approaches work with energy and a positive, constructive attitude
  • Demonstrates strong oral and written communication skills, remains calm, in control and good humoured even under pressure and demonstrate openness to change and ability to manage complexities
