Under the overall authority of the representative and head of office and the direct supervision of the national professional officer for communication and information sector of the Accra office and in liaison with advisor communication and information in Dakar, the incumbent is tasked with the delivery of a range of activities in support of projects/programmes delivery. The Programme Assistant is responsible for retrieving pertinent information, assembling and collating information and contributing to the logistical and administrative preparation of the Empowering young people in Africa through media and communication project.

Job Description

Job Title: Project Assistant 

In particular, the Project Assistant will:

• Assist in the coordination, implementation and monitoring activities related to the project in Ghana
• Assist to liaise with UNESCO staff at Headquarters, Dakar office, other field offices and with other key stakeholders which are member states on the projectm UN system agencies in particular IOM and UNHCR, donor, media civil society organisations working at the international, regional and local level to ensure effective implementation of the project
• Assist in the implementation of the communication strategy for the full visibility of the implemented activities and achievements of the project
• Assist in the reporting of activities implemented in the project (Ghana) on financial situation, raising potential issues with project managers in field offices
• Initiate and review requests for payments against contractual obligations in the financial system and administrative procedures and ensures follow-up
• Assist in any other activities (such as outreach, networking and briefings and speech writing) that may be required to ensure the success of the project implementation
• Assist in other assignments to reinforce the programme, promoting an enabling environment for freedom of expression and feedoom of information, to foster the role of media for development, democracy and dialogue

Qualification Required & Experience

• At least a University degree (BA or equivalent) in communication or information sciences, political science, international relations, journalism, international development or in another area covered by the work of the UNESCO’s programmes in freedom of expression and media development

Work Experience

• At least 2 years of relevant professional experience (relevant experience acquired at international level is a plus) on issues related to support to media and/or freedom of expression and/or media development
• Experience working on projects which involves media, professional and quality journalism and youth empowerment
• Experience in the implementation and reporting related to international donor-funded projects

Skills / Competencies

• Proven ability to coordinate large scale projects / programmes
• A track record in project and programme implementation in partnership with government partners and civil society and an ability to manage budgets and report on implementation
• Excellent drafting skills, ability to produce reports and papers on technical and strategic issues
• Ability to multitask, prioritize and deliver to deadline, as well as work under pressure
• Good IT and information skills
• Ability to work in an international or multicultural environment. Good team orientation

Languages

• Excellent knowledge of English and good knowledge of French (written and spoken)
