In 2000, world leaders agreed to meet eight goals that will end extreme poverty by 2015 – The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). All eight MDGs are achievable by 2015, but only if government scale up their efforts and live up to their promises. The Millennium Campaigns is an inter-agency body of the United Nations formed to mobilize citizens around the world to pressure their governments to meet the MDGs. The Campaign partners with non-profit, non-governmental and faith-based organisations, as well as with members of parliament, local government bodies and private sector organisations.

Job Description

THE UNITED NATIONS MILLENNIUM CAMPAIGN

Period: One year with the Possibility of Extension
Level: NOB

Summary of key outcomes:

MDG Campaign Strategy and Joint Plan of Action designed and executed; Well-managed advocacy events and initiatives around the key moments and other processes identified by stakeholders
Effective campaigns and research are facilitated aimed at influencing the policy environment, as well as the allocation and effective use of resources to eradicate poverty and achieve the MDGs;
Increased and regular exposure of the MDGs and the MDG Campaign through coordinated and sustainable alliances with media and through systematic release of news articles and feature stories using various Media outlets (TV, radio, print and internet) and events management to promote the MDGs as a key element of the UN’s efforts to “Deliver as One”
Functions:
1. Leads and supports the design, coordination and implementation of the national MDG Campaign and advocacy and Joint Plan of Action:
Actively support strategic coalition building and advocacy with various constituencies ranging from grassroots and community-based organizations to parliamentarians, local governments, youth, faith-based organisations etc. at the national and local levels; Promote and operationalise advocacy and campaign strategies in country; Identify key campaigns events, processes and advocacy tools to promote necessary policy change for the achievement of the MDGs sector ministries
Provide appropriate technical and other support to strengthen the capacity of Campaign partners in relation to policy, strategy development, tools for impact monitoring and communication
Promotes coordinated actions of UNCT and the international community to achieve the MDGS: Support the UN Resident Coordinator’s (UNRC) office to align the UNCT’s strategies, the UNDAF and activities, including the monitoring and evaluation framework to MDGs. Coordinate between with the communications teams of the UN Millennium Campaign and UNCT in the development and implementation of communications strategies and media activities in relation to the MDGs. Support the RC’s office in relation to dialogue with governments on the MDGs;
2. Supports planning and design of strategies for communications and media outreach:
Draft, revise and put in action communication and outreach strategy based on the collaboration framework of the UN Country Team and the UN Millennium Campaign. Understand media dynamism and public relations as well as perform as a spokesperson on key issues related to MDGs, as and when required under instructions; Support partners to develop and implement effective communications and media strategies to support the Campaign
3. Lead fundraising efforts in support Campaign
Support partners to develop innovative and effective national strategies as basis for fund mobilisation and support them in the fundraising process. Lead efforts within the UNCT to align agency strategies to the MDGs. Facilitate linkages between UNCT, donor Community and Campaign partners, Support partners to strengthen their capacity to manage and account for resources
4. Active in the Millennium Campaign’s regional activities
Under the guidance of the Deputy Director (Africa) and the respective Regional Coordinator of the Millennium Campaign, support the coordination of the Campaign’s activities in the sub-region
Engage regional political and economic institutions as may be necessary to advance the MDGs agenda

Required Skills or Experience

Competencies:

Strong understanding and knowledge of development issues, particularly those related to poverty reduction and the MDGs. Willingness to work for ambitious advocacy programme and ability to engage a wide range of stakeholder. Ability to advocate for achievement of MDGs and provide technical support on communication strategy. Excellent written and oral communication skills
Proficiency in the use of the internet and PC applications. Strong attention to details and the ability to work under great pressure and tight deadlines
Recruitment Qualifications:
Advanced Degree in social sciences, environmental sciences, gender, communications, journalism, public relations, political science, humanities or other related field with at five (5) years demonstrated working experience in an institution, including the media, academia, research institution, the public or private sectors, in development organisations and social movements
Ability to apply in-depth sound technical knowledge and skills in development work, media, current affairs, and communications to plan and implement MDG campaign and advocacy
Good interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, understanding of African culture and customs are an advantage
Language Requirements:
Fluency in spoken and written English/French. Competency in a second language is an advantage
