Job Description<\/strong><\/p>\n Job Title:\u00a0Regional Coordinator, West Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n Some of the duties will entail representing INBAR, and leveraging and scaling bamboo and rattanbased interventions to new geographies. Another part of the position will entail the oversight of the project \u201cInter-Africa Bamboo Smallholder Farmers Livelihood Development Programme\u201d. Supported by the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), the project is being implemented in Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana and Madagascar, with links to China. The West Africa Regional Coordinator will have direct oversight of activities in Ethiopia and Ghana, while INBAR\u2019s Central Africa Regional Coordinator will be responsible for project activities in Cameroon and Madagascar. \nThe project goal is to enhance incomes, livelihoods and climate change adaptive capacities of African smallholder farmers, women and youth by upscaling and increasing their participation in climate-smart bamboo value chains. There are four objectives:
\n1. Upscale and diversify existing target country bamboo value chains and promote industrialisation: Develop investment opportunities based on
\naccurate resource assessments and strengthen institutions to enable wide-scale implementation.
\n2. Facilitate restoration of degraded areas: boost market demand for bamboo resources and improve planting material delivery systems and management to reverse land degradation, reduce erosion, and protect watersheds.
\n3. Integrate bamboo into country development plans, particularly for climate change: build local and national capacity to assess and identify how to enhance bamboo\u2019s economic and environmental benefits.
\n4. Enhance South-South cooperation within Africa and between Africa and China: Enable sharing and transfer of best practices, knowledge, skills and
\ntechnologies within Africa, via twinning between Ethiopia and Ghana, Madagascar and Cameroon, as well as from China to all target African countries.<\/p>\n
\nThe successful candidate will:
\nBe responsible for success of the project overall, and specific project activities in Ethiopia and Ghana, including setting and delivering of yearly work plans and performance targets.
\nLead a project team of about eight staff, supervise short-term consultants, and liaise with project partners at local and national levels to ensure all
\nactivities are implemented in accordance with the project\u2019s result framework, work plan and budget.
\nSupervise the Central Africa Regional Coordinator\u2019s project activities in Cameroon and Madagascar.
\nBe responsible for preparation of all donor technical reports.
\nProvide financial oversight of the project, working closely with INBAR\u2019s Finance Department to prepare all required donor financial reports.
\nLiaise with INBAR national focal points in Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana and Madagascar and maintain good relations with relevant government institutions in all four countries.
\nWork closely with the INBAR Communications, Membership Affairs and Programme teams to synthesize and share results and knowledge developed
\nover the project.
\nProvide policy support and scaling-up strategies to target countries that identify and support best practices on growing bamboo-based livelihood value chains.
\nCoordinate with other INBAR initiatives globally, including INBAR\u2019s flagship program the Global Assessment of Bamboo and Rattan (GABAR)
\nSuccessfully leverage the project to expand bamboo-based activities to other African countries, where possible.
\nWork with target countries to design training materials and extension programmes in English and French.
\nProvide technical and administrative support to project field staff and local project partners to establish Common Production and Training Centers
\n(CPTCs).
\nProvide oversight to field staff for the establishment of model demonstration common production and training centers\/groups for value-added bamboo product manufacture
\nConduct or coordinate action research to develop and adopt proven appropriate planting protocols, tools\/techniques for livelihood and enterprise development.
\nAuthor\/coordinate frequent project updates to be used for public awareness of the project, publication of project results in peer reviewed scientific
\npublications, presentations, & reports.
\nWork closely with the Central Africa Regional Coordinator, liaising regularly on day-to-day administrative and operational issues.
\nUndertake other related tasks as required by INBAR Director of Global Programme.
\nExperience:
\nA Minimum of five years of demonstrated experience in implementing large-scale livelihood and environment development projects, preferably with experience of working in East and West Africa.
\nProven ability to manage time well, prioritize, delegate, and work with a range of stakeholders.
\nDemonstrated expertise one or more areas of natural resource management, especially in the areas of conducting resource assessments, land restoration, capacity strengthening, and value chain development.
\nStrong knowledge of community development and participatory-based approaches, with a proven track-record of delivering livelihood impacts in previous projects.
\nExperience of working on bamboo and, or, other related Non-Timber Forest Product (NTFP) value chains would be a strong advantage.
\nEducation:
\nA postgraduate degree in environmental science, sustainable resource management or another related field.
\nLanguage:
\nExcellent written and spoken English required, French proficiency would be an advantage.
\nTravel:
\nThe successful candidate should be willing to undertake extensive travel in East and West Africa, as well as to other INBAR offices as required.<\/p>\n
