Plan Ghana an international child centred community development organisation, is looking for a dynamic and results oriented person to fill the position of Gender and Advocacy Specialist for a five year period.

The main purpose for the post is to ensure that gender and particularly girls’ issues are mainstreamed in Program Unit (PU) level plans and programs in the country, and that gender related campaigns are translated into effective and innovative programs and other initiatives benefiting children across the country.

The position reports to the Program Support Manager and would be located in the Country Office, Accra.

 

Gender and Advocacy Specialist

Key Responsibilities:

  • To lead the development and delivery of a Gender audit across the Country as well as a subsequent follow up on action plans
  • To lead the development and roll out of a Ghana Girl Power Programme as well as a subsequent follow up action Plan over a five year period. The position co-ordinates with Girl Power Programme with four NGOs implementing partners
  • Develop and deliver a country gender strategy including a business plan for the country’s implementation of ‘Because I am a Girl” (BIAAG)
  • Provide technical support to Program Unit offices (PUs) for Gender campaign initiatives
  • Contribute to the development of a country Gender program framework as well as a country BIAAG business plan
  • Support the development of strategies to ensure Gender equality is mainstreamed in Plan Ghana’s human resource, culture and other organisational processes and maintain gender sensitivity towards staff and Plan associates
  • Support and deliver knowledge sharing strategy to ensure that lessons learnt are Published and distributed widely
  • Inform, motivate and advise Plan Ghana Country Office and Program Unit staff on gender issues
  • Co-ordinate and manage the development and implementation of gender related activities
  • Provide regular, timely progress reports on role performance indicators as agreed with the supervisor
  • Develop, support and provide leadership to country level networks to increase Plan’s capacity in the area of Gender
  • Provide support for research, publications and dissemination on Gender and girls/women’s issues in the Country
  • Provide training and other capacity building activities in Gender and effective programming
  • Provide coaching and mentoring for staff on gender related issues
  • Co-ordinate the activities of the Country Steering Committee (CSC) of Girl Power Programme
  • Co-ordinate the activities of Plan Ghana’s local partners
  • Collate reports from partners and consolidate reports for donors
  • Work in consultation with the Country Steering Committee (CSC) to ensure that all local partners and their implementation partners deliver as per the annual plans and targets set
  • Adhere to Plan Ghana’s Child Protection Policy and ensure children are protected at all times

Required Skills or Experience

  • A Masters Degree in Gender Studies or related field
  • A minimum of 5 years solid experience in gender issues in the NGO/voluntary sector
  • Experience of developing and implementing gender strategies
  • Experience in advocacy activities
  • Understanding of the Convention of the Rights of the Child and other human rights instruments
  • Conceptual and strategic thinking and analytical skills, strong organisational and project management skills, Excellent Training and presentation skills, Good Research and policy development skills, Excellent writing and editing skills, Excellent English language communication both written and verbal, Ability to deliver to tight deadlines
