Join IWMI’s team in Ghana as a Researcher – Circular Economy and you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and leading research on strategies for adopting innovative circular economy approaches to waste management across different geographies, including issues of human and environmental health, sustainable re-use and recycling approaches and innovations in waste management and governance.

Job Description

Job Title: Researcher – Circular Economy (Waste Management)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Generate ideas for research in the circular economy and water pollution and wastewater management space, including identifying opportunities for interdisciplinary research in developing countries and delivering innovation across a range of sectors in both urban and rural contexts.
  • Lead project development and implementation in collaboration with colleagues and partners, ensuring delivery of high quality outputs, which includes designing and supervising data collection and analysis from field research.
  • Assess options for resource recovery from waste streams (including nutrients, water, energy) from a technical, economic and governance perspective.
  • Assess options for using innovative nature-based solutions for water quality amelioration and other forms of applications to minimize water pollution.
  • Develop project proposals from the idea stage, driving their intellectual development and ensuring alignment with IWMI’s 2019-2023 Strategy and the CGIAR’s 2030 research and innovation strategy.
  • Translate research outputs on a range of issues including but not limited to environmental and health impacts of low water quality or wastewater reuse into clear policy-focused outputs (briefs, presentations, research papers, etc) that include recommendations relevant to a range of stakeholders including national governments, AMCOW, FAO, UNEP, UN-Habitat and WHO.
  • Prepare research reports, journal articles, seminar papers and other scientific manuscripts for the dissemination of research results to national and international audiences.
  • Support opportunities created under other IWMI Programs and One CGIAR initiatives in the context of circular economy and water pollution and build synergies with and between diverse stakeholder groups.

Requirements

The successful candidate will posses the following:

  • PhD in environmental sciences, engineering, or other related fields; or equivilant research and professional experience with a record of high quality publications record.
  • Minimum of 3 years of post-doctoral experience in research on technical solutions for resource recovery and reuse, circularity and water pollution studies including substantial experience in tackling environmental challenges related to waste/wastewater management.
  • Experience of developing and leading research teams with multiple partners and covering multiple disciplines in developing countries and elsewhere.
  • Previous work experience in developing country contexts (Asia and/or Africa), including data scarce, and sometimes remote, environments.
  • Proven ability to bring in research funding.
  • Capacity for research leadership attested to by possession of a solid publication record.
  • Evidence of strategic and conceptual thinking, including the ability to develop an innovative research agenda and lead thinking among groups of researchers.
  • Effective project, people management and team working skills to oversee a range of activities and motivate people to succeed.
  • Understanding of ecological principles, the concept of ecosystem services and links to water and agriculture.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, managers and other stakeholders in a multicultural setting, with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Desirable:

  • Understanding of relevant international conventions and the contribution of science to their implementation.
  • Experience working and living in developing countries.
  • Knowledge of gender and social inclusion issues relating to the circular economy.
  • Understanding of institutional governance, economics and social issues as they impact water resources development and their management and use.
  • Sound qualitative and quantitative skills.
  • Knowledge of French language or other international languages.
