PEG delivers Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) asset-based financing to consumers who lack both access to reliable electricity and formal banking services. PEG’s anchor product – a basic solar home system that includes three lights, a phone charger and a radio – allows consumers living on $5-10 per day to access clean light for working and studying after hours, avoid harmful air pollution from kerosene based lighting solutions, and also build credit for additional products and services over time.

Job Title: Data Engineer

About the Role:

We are seeking a talented, self-directed Data Engineer to design, develop, implement, test, document, and operate large-scale, high-volume, high-performance data structures for our business.

Gather business and functional requirements and translate these requirements into robust, scalable, operable solutions that work well within the overall data architecture. Analyze source data systems and drive best practices in source teams. Participate in the full development life cycle, end-to-end, from design, implementation and testing, to documentation, delivery, support, and maintenance. Produce comprehensive, usable dataset documentation and metadata.

The ideal candidate relishes working with large volumes of data, enjoys the challenge of highly complex technical contexts, and, above all else, is passionate about data and analytics.

The ideal candidate needs to possess exceptional technical expertise in Python and have hands-on knowledge on SQL.

Basic requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Business Administration, Mathematics or a related field.

• 3+ years of industry experience as a Data Engineer or related specialty (e.g., Business Intelligence Engineer, Data Scientist)

• Experience in data modeling, ETL development, and Data warehousing.

• Demonstrated collaborative skills

• Avid learner, constantly keeping up to date with technology advances

• Demonstrated experience in the Data domain, specifically related to application development and transactional data.

• Advanced Academic qualification

Required Technical Expertise

• Knowledge of state-of-the-art startup-style software development methods: Github, StackOverflow, JIRA, Confluence, etc

• Experience with Python and associated tools & resources

• Experience with Jupyter notebooks

• Domain expertise in traditional Database technology. Integration, Relational DBM’s, Data Warehouse.

• Domain expertise in a SQL RDBMS [hands on experience]

• Comprehensive understanding Relational SQL

• Data distribution concepts (Bulk data and real time)

• Maintenance of Data Quality

• Working with Linux

Additional Requirements

• Analytical functions over integrated data sets. Predictive and reflective analytics, familiar with statistics and correlations.

Influential Expertise

• Demonstrated ability to present proposals to senior technical and non-technical members

• Interact with external clients and develop an understanding of their strategic data needs

Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with our data analysts & engineers on to build and deploy algorithms on the platform.

• Help develop training data tools for the platform.

• Develop prototypes and tools, with focus on simplicity & ease of use.

• Work in a collaborate team environment, co-designing and co-implementing key applications & components.

• Work with clients to provide data solutions including; data integration, Reflective and predictive analytics, data import, data access and data visualization.

• Build and deliver high quality datasets to support business analysis and customer reporting needs.

• Interface with business customers, gathering requirements and delivering complete data structures.

• Act as thought leader for PEG Africa in the data domain

• Architect solutions meeting client needs and requirements
