Job Title: Laboratory Assistant

Lancaster University Ghana/Transnational Academic Group Ghana is looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic and self-motivated individual with a passion for teaching, research, technical support and a commitment to excellence for Lectureship and Laboratory Assistant role in the university.

We are looking to appoint an outstanding candidate for Lectureship  position in the following area: Laboratory Assistant

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities outlined are not intended to be an exhaustive list but rather to provide guidance on the main aspects of the post.

The post-holder will be required to be flexible in his or her duties:

  1. You will be responsible for a range of technical activities in the laboratory, including setting out of experiments for the students, day-to-day maintenance of laboratory equipment for teaching, open days, and other requirements of the department as and when required;
  2. You will work closely with the undergraduate students and be a general first point of contact in the laboratory for teaching staff and students, providing advice and assistance when needed along with ensuring all health and safety procedures are adhered to;
  3. To ensure that teaching practical sessions are supported by regularly transporting equipment and reagents to and from laboratories. Assisting in basic preparation of reagents as required in addition to labelling large numbers of items necessary for practical sessions;
  4. Responsible for keeping the teaching laboratories clean and tidy, including the removal of waste and audio visual facilities at the end of sessions with some flexibility in hours should sessions overrun;
  5. Schedule and perform periodic health & safety and maintenance checks;
  6. Responsible for conducting routine maintenance of laboratory equipment;
  7. Consider Health and Safety in the performance of all duties by assessing the risks of the planned activity and performing the tasks having considered, and acted to secure, the safety of yourself and others;
  8. To monitor general provision and use of laboratory consumables and alert Programme Coordinator (Engineering Department) of any shortages. Then liaise with Finance department to source and order laboratory consumables, maintaining accurate routine record of stock for the teaching laboratory experiments;
  9. You will also assist with other general departmental duties when needed.

Required Skills or Experience

A First degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience. Essential CV
Experience of working in a similar role within a teaching or research environment. Essential CV
Demonstrable basic mechanical, chemical and/or electrical skills. Essential CV/Interview
Experience of, or basic understanding of technology and familiar with basic technical terms. Essential CV/Interview
Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Essential CV/Interview
An understanding of Health & Safety regulations and procedures. Essential CV/Interview
Basic understanding of electronic maintenance. Desirable CV/Interview
Basic understanding of the principles of the technical discipline. Desirable CV/Interview
Experience in a laboratory environment. Desirable CV/Interview
Basic IT skills in the following packages; Microsoft Office. Essential CV/Interview/Presentation
Good organisational skills with a strong attention to detail. Essential CV/Interview
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Essential CV/Interview
Ability to manage own time, prioritise work and to deliver to set deadlines. Essential CV/Interview
Ability to lift and move objects as this role will involve storing and moving consumables and equipment. Essential Interview
