Solidaridad West Africa is a not-for-profit organization that supports the sustainable development of farmers and production systems in West Africa, through the enhancement of value chains of fresh and processed agricultural commodities and other non-agricultural commodities.

Our activities in West Africa are focused on fresh fruits, oil palm, gold, cotton, maize, soy, and cocoa. As the Regional Expertise Center (REC) within Solidaridad’s international network, SWA focuses on stimulating sustainable supply chains through innovations in good practices, robust infrastructure, sustainable landscapes management and enabling policy environment.

Solidaridad trains producers in best practices to produce more with less. We provide capacity building to producer organizations and enable them to access knowledge, inputs, finance, and markets. We develop and promote the integration of good economic, social and environmental management into standard business and production practices.

Solidaridad regional office is based in Accra, Ghana and currently has program activities and operations in Senegal, Mali, Cote D’Ivoire, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and Sierra Leone

Job Description

Job Title: Knowledge Management/ Interactive Training Specialist

Duty Station: Accra, (with at least 30% of time spent in Western and Brong-Ahafo regions)

Main Responsibilities:

Program Implementation

  • Develop General Awareness Training packages through radio, and media campaigns throughout the 52 targeted communities (reach-11,000 people)
  • Develop, design, and coordinate the preparation of climate change and REDD+ training packages using appropriate communication approaches for targeted beneficiaries/stakeholders (e.g. farmers, community members, CBOs/NGOs) in the DGM program (approximately 1000 people or more).  This training must be in-depth training, which is largely on-farm and not classroom based.
  • Ensure that there is a direct linkage between climate change and REDD+ training content and livelihoods of communities.
  • Use all types of training methods including video, film, cell phones, radio, competitions and prizes etc and in the local language
  • Development of a communication plan and a training plan for the project and an approach to include all levels of the community, particularly women, youth, and migrants
  • Develop specialized training for specific groups –(i) women, (ii) chiefs and elders
  • Develop a pass/fail exam at the end of the training that can be implemented orally.
  • Develop training for writing/developing subproject proposals
  • Work with the NRM specialist and coordinator to identify technical training needs and gaps (e.g., training needed in energy efficiency, horticulture, irrigation, etc)
  • Prepare detailed annual and quarterly work plans and budgets for field activities pertaining to community knowledge development on climate change and REDD+.
  • Coordinate the implementation and monitoring of the use of the training packages in the field.
  • Lead in the training of trainers, by organizing appropriate workshops/knowledge and information exchange visits/courses for the delivery of DGM community knowledge development in climate change and REDD+.
  • Coordinate the activities of consultants and facilitators hired to deliver specific capacity building activities identified by the program team for communities on climate change and REDD+.
  • Evaluate field training contents and approaches to ensure that the program objectives are being met and where necessary review and update training materials and approaches and all DGM knowledge products.
  • Ensure project visibility in line with world bank DGM requirements by establishing and maintaining a relationship with local media.
  • Document all project activities with video, photography and narrative/stories.
  • Coordinate the development of content for a wide variety of communications tools – e.g. electronic and print publications, the intranet, video, PowerPoint, social media, newsletters, roller stands, posters.
  • Support the preparation of periodic reports (technical and financial) to the World Bank DGM task leader in line with the NEA contract agreement with the World Bank
  • Ensure visibility of G-DGM within the country and other DGM implementation countries.
  • Liaise with relevant government departments and key organizations on technical and operational issues relating to the implementation of capacity building, knowledge development and dissemination of DGM activities to beneficiaries and stakeholders on climate change and REDD+ activities.
  • Support the development and the implementation of project/program plans and activities in close coordination with partners and the National Steering Committee
  • Support the procurement of contracted third parties in carrying out project/program activities, including performance evaluation and monitoring of project work plans
  • Support the development of strategies, guidelines, manuals, and procedures for program implementation.

Required Skills or Experience

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D in Knowledge Management, Social Science, Communication, or related field
  • At least five years of relevant experience in similar positions supporting environmental, forestry, natural resources management and/or integrated rural development projects implemented by national/international NGOs;
  • Strong experience in developing, aggregating and disseminating knowledge products and resources for communities
  • Strong experience using interactive training to bring content to life and to teach others how to train using different materials such as film, games, group interactions, field visits, etc
  • Ability to explain complex and abstract concepts in simple terms and adapt language and content to different target audiences
  • Excellent facilitation, program/activity management, and written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to understand the difference between presenting and training
  • Good understanding of climate change and REDD+ activities processes and how they affect community livelihoods.
  • Good communication skills in English, Twi, and other languages spoken in the cocoa and charcoal producing areas in Western and Brong-Ahafo regions
